How to treat Insomnia naturally

Insomnia is a sleep disorder characterized by persistent difficulty falling asleep. Moreover many people also struggle to stay asleep, or experiencing restful sleep, despite having the opportunity to do so. It is a common sleep problem that can affect people of all ages. However it is more prevalent in adults and is more common in women than men.

There are two main types of insomnia:

  1. Primary Insomnia: This type of insomnia is not linked to any underlying health condition and is considered a separate disorder on its own.
  2. Secondary Insomnia: This type of insomnia is caused by an underlying medical condition, such as depression, anxiety, chronic pain, medications, substance abuse, or other sleep disorders.

In September 2021, it was estimated that around 16 million adults in the UK were struggling with some form of sleep disorder, including insomnia.

Insomnia can have various causes, including stress, anxiety and lifestyle factors. But also irregular sleep schedule, poor sleep habits, and environmental factors like noise or uncomfortable sleeping conditions. It can lead to daytime sleepiness, fatigue as well as irritability. Affected people also reported difficulty concentrating, and impaired performance in daily activities.

Anxiety disorders which can be a cause for insomnia were prevalent in the UK, with estimates suggesting that around 1 in 6 adults were affected.

Are you one of them?

How to treat insomnia

Treatment for insomnia and anxiety disorders depends on the underlying cause and severity. It may involve lifestyle changes and also sleep hygiene practices. The use of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has also achieved great successes. However, medication prescribed by a healthcare professional is often the shortest and quickest route.

Unfortunately, many prescribed medications can cause side effects, according to the NHS in UK, those could be:

  • a bitter or metallic taste in your mouth or dry mouth
  • feeling sleepy or tired the next day
  • headaches
  • feeling dizzy
  • feeling or being sick (Vomitting and nausea)
  • diarrhoea
  • back pain

“Serious side effects can range from developing memory loss (amnesia), see or hear things that are not real (hallucinations), fall over – particularly when you over 65, think things that are not true – these are called delusions, to feeling low or sad – this could be a sign of depression.” – NHS 2023

Alarming Sideffects – but there is a better solution

As a wellness advocate I found  these side effects rather disturbing. Having suffered with stress and insomnia for many years myself – I have discovered a much better and easier solution.

The power of Essential oils is amazing, while supporting good health and well being. I will show you how.

Natural treatment for insomnia and anxiety disorders

Lavender

Lavender oil has neuroprotective properties linked to preventing oxidative stress in the brain.

Reducing oxidative stress can help preserve neurological functions and minimize the effects of insomnia.

Lavender oil is extremely versatile and has lots of additional healing properties.

Worldwide, it is used as a natural sedative (to reduce stress and promote sleep), antidepressant, and analgesic (pain reliever).

Frankincense

Frankincense oil has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antifungal properties.

This makes it ideal for healing bedsores (damage to the skin caused by prolonged pressure), which are very common among stroke patients because of paralysis.

It’s also suggested that frankincense oil can support mental health by influencing the limbic system (the area of the brain responsible for regulating instinct and mood).

Vetiver

The roots of the vetiver plant are unique in their ability to grow downward, creating a thick tangle of roots in the ground. The root of the hearty vetiver plant is the origin of Vetiver oil, and produces a fragrance that is earthy and strong. This essential oil is very popular in aromatherapy and has many medicinal properties:

Grounding and calming emotions. Vetiver oil’s aroma is sweet, woody, and smoky–emitting a strong, earthy scent. Use the earthy tones of Vetiver essential oil as a base for your favourite DIY diffuser blends. Vetiver oil is rich in sesquiterpenes, which contain grounding properties. When used on the skin or inhaled, Vetiver essential oil can help provide a calming and grounding effect on emotions.

Prevents Nervous Disorders

A tonic for the nerves is called a nervine, like the essential oil of vetiver. It takes care of the nerves and maintains their good health. It also heals the damage done to the nerves by shock, fear, and stress. Furthermore, it helps get rid of nervous disorders, epileptic and hysteric attacks, nervous and neurotic disorders such as Parkinson’s Disease, and lack of control over limbs and spasms.

Relieves Insomnia

The essential oil of vetiver is a well-known sedative. Sleep is extremely important for the health of both the mind and body. When we do not receive adequate sleep or have too many sleepless nights, our body functions begin to slow down. To help promote a restful night’s sleep, rub Vetiver oil on the bottom of your feet. Vetiver oil is a great essential oil for sleep and relaxation and can help give your body the sleep it needs.

Lavender

Lavender is widely considered a must-have essential oil because of its versatility. It’s been used and cherished for centuries because of its unmistakable aroma and myriad of benefits. When taken internally, Lavender can help soothe and relax the mind.* When applied topically, Lavender may reduce the appearance of skin imperfections. Add it to bathwater to soak away stress or apply to your temples and the back of your neck. Add a few drops to pillows, bedding, or the bottoms of your feet to prepare for a restful night’s sleep.

Vetiver

Vetiver, a member of the grass family, is grown for many reasons. Unlike other grasses, the root system of Vetiver grows down, making it ideal for helping to prevent erosion and providing soil stabilization. Vetiver oil has a rich, exotic, complex aroma that is used extensively in perfumes. Due to Vetiver essential oil’s calming and grounding aroma, it is an ideal oil to use in massage therapy.
